Whale or Mermaid

I have never posted one of those emails that come from friends into my in box, but this one is too good to not post. I do not know who wrote it, but they must have been middle aged. I am not a mermaid and never will be, so I will be happy being a whale! The world does have a pull that tells us to be loved we need to be skinny. NOT! My God and my husband love me just the way I am. If I do become slimmer it will be for health not for image.

I have been blessed with many wonderful experiences in life, and I am grateful for each one. Tonight, I visited my now five week old grandson, he is beautiful and a treasure! With his birth I have a new weekly appointment, my goal is to visit him weekly.

I would enjoy reading comments.

Recently, in large French city, a poster featuring a young, thin and tan woman appeared in the window of a gym. It read:

THIS SUMMER DO YOU WANT TO BE A MERMAID OR A WHALE?

A middle aged woman, whose physical characteristics did not match those of the woman on the poster, responded publicly to the question posed by the gym.

To Whom It May Concern;

Whales are always surrounded by friends (dolphins, sea lions, curious humans). They have an active sex life; they get pregnant and have adorable baby whales. They have a wonderful time with dolphins stuffing themselves with shrimp. They play and swim in the seas, seeing wonderful places like Patagonia, the Barren Sea and the coral reefs of Polynesia. Whales are wonderful singers and have even recorded CDs. They are incredible creatures and virtually have no predators other than humans. They are loved, protected and admired by almost everyone in the world.

Mermaids don't exist. If they did exist, they would be lining up outside the offices of Argentinean psychoanalysts due to identity crisis. Fish or human? They don't have a sex life because they kill men who get close to them not to mention how could they have sex? Therefore they don't have kids either. Not to mention who wants to get close to a girl who smells like a fish store?

The choice is perfectly clear to me; I want to be a whale.

P.S. We are in an age when media puts into our heads the idea that only skinny people are beautiful, but I prefer to enjoy an ice cream with my kids, a good dinner with a man who makes me shiver and a piece of chocolate with my friends. With time we gain weight because we accumulate so much information and wisdom in our heads that when there is no more room it distributes out to the rest of our bodies. So we aren't heavy, we are enormously cultured, educated and happy. Beginning today, when I look at my butt in the mirror I will think, “Good gosh, look how smart I am.”

This was good. My heart breaks for those who suffer with eating disorders, body image mood disorders, low self esteem.....and I can go on! It's so hard to love ourselves when the world tells us we are unlovable because our bodies do not meet an impossible standard.

Thanks for keeping me updated on my broken comment box. I finally got it fixed - for real. When we trade our skins for those that appear more lovely it often causes problems internally, like when the html codes in the new skin doen't match the creator's application. Much like the mermaid and her un-natural body!

Robin, I tried to leave a post on "Feeding a Hungry Soul" and could not. When did you begin that one? I never noticed it before.

Yvette I like your comparisons on skins! I actually started that blog five years ago, but had it hidden. I felt as you did, a few weeks ago I need to start a prayer log that is visiable. Years ago I knew one day I would write more concerning prayer. At this point my goal is to read through the NT monthly...catching prayers, commands, and promises sent from above.

I will check out the comment thing.

Don't know how I came upon your blog! How much this post is needed today! When I've talked about size issues about us humans I invariably come up with the comparisons in the animal kingdom. I'm no chihuahua, I'm a St. Bernard! I'm not a humming bird, I'm a wise owl; I'm not a salmon, I'm a whale! And so on.. There are folks who are smaller than me and those who are larger than me, and that's the way God likes it!
